Costa Rica: Where to Eat, Play & Stay

  • September 6, 2021

[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1633898678384{padding-bottom: 10px !important;}” simple_background_color=”#f7f2ee” el_class=”premium”][vc_column][vc_column_text]My trip to Costa Rica was planned last minute, but ended up being one of my favorite trips. Also, it was my first vacation together with my best friend of 23 years! Since we wanted a mix of adventure and relaxation, we split our six days between La Fortuna and San Mateo. Below, I’m sharing recommendations on where to eat, stay and play in Costa Rica.

Check out my Costa Rica overview, it covers things like: currency, getting around, and more.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][mkdf_tabs type=”vertical”][mkdf_tabs_item tab_title=”Where to Stay”][vc_column_text]

Hotel Lomas del Volcán

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Located in the center of La Fortuna, Hotel Lomas del Volcán provides one of the best Arenal Volcano views. Although the hotel is centrally located in La Fortuna, it’s also tucked away from the noise. Instead, all you hear are the birds chirping and wildlife around you. I love that Lomas del Volcán is surrounded by nature and has a diverse range of plants from the region.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”two” space_between_items=”tiny” images=”9294,9291″ image_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

Activities & amenities

Because of it’s location, there’s an endless amount of activities to partake in. From ziplining and chocolate tours, to horseback riding and hanging bridges. Hotel Lomas del Volcán can arrange activities and excursions, and also recommend tour companies to check out. Also, there’s a one-mile private nature trail onsite that you can hike.

After a long day, relax and unwind by the pool or hot tub.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”two” space_between_items=”tiny” images=”9295,9302″ image_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

Food

Hotel Lomas del Volcán has a restaurant called “Lomas” and a bar called “El Volcan Bar”. The hotel offers breakfast (which is part of the rate) and includes fruit, coffee, and a dish of your choice. I got to try their traditional dish — gallo pinto, omelet, and even toast with eggs.

We ate and drank at El Volcan Bar twice and the food and drinks were delicious. We also had dinner once, and it was also delicious — I highly recommend their passion fruit daquiri![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”three” space_between_items=”tiny” images=”9281,9292,9287,9285,9272,9290″ image_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

Rooms

Pick between the bungalow and the bungalow deluxe rooms. We got a bungalow, which included: two queen beds, TV with cable, two terraces, a refrigerator, and more.

The bungalow deluxe has the same amenities, but it also includes a jacuzzi on the balcony overlooking the Arenal Volcano.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”three” space_between_items=”tiny” image_size=”full” images=”9307,9308,9309,9310,9311,9312″][vc_empty_space][vc_separator][vc_column_text]

Finca Chilanga (Airbnb)

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]I’m going to start this review by saying, wow! Finca Chilanga was actually a last-minute find, we wanted to book another Airbnb around Jacó, but it got booked. In reality, I’m thankful the other listing was taken because this place is absolutely breathtaking.

Finca Chilanga has three villas and an infinity pool overlooking the valley and mountains – we stayed in the “Caoba” villa.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”two” space_between_items=”tiny” images=”9357,9359″ image_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

Activities & amenities

Besides relaxing in, or by, the pool, you can do a lot of things nearby. Like: hiking trails, swimming in Rio Jesus Maria and/or utilizing their yoga platform.

If you’ve rented a car, then day trips to Jacó beach, Carara National Park and El Encanto Waterfall are feasible. Also, the host has a guidebook filled with things to see and do nearby.

I love that Finca Chilanga has laundry service on-site for only $10 USD. There’s a hamper in your villa, and once ready, simply let Dan know and place the hamper on your patio. We left for a day trip to Jacó beach and our laundry was done by the time we returned.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”two” space_between_items=”tiny” images=”9317,9316″ image_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

Food

Breakfast is included in the price and differs everyday. One morning was gallo pinto with eggs, plantains and fresh watermelon from their farm. Another morning was fried eggs with toast and fresh mangoes from their farm.

The food at Finca Chilanga is literally farm-to-table, in fact, the chef owns and lives on her own farm nearby. Everything tasted so fresh, including our dinner — which was $20 USD per person.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”four” space_between_items=”tiny” image_size=”full” images=”9326,9325,9324,9323″][vc_column_text]

Villa

All of the villas have a wrap around patio. Ours provided a view of the mountains on one side, and a view of the pool on the other.

The villa is very spacious and clean, however, they don’t have TVs or air conditioning, which I didn’t mind. I’d suggest leaving the fans on, and also leaving the doors open at night since there’s a screen door. I really loved having the fresh air seep into the room at night.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”three” space_between_items=”tiny” image_size=”full” images=”9358,9315,9318″][/mkdf_tabs_item][mkdf_tabs_item tab_title=”Where to Eat”][vc_column_text]

Sodas

While in La Fortuna, we ate at Soda Hormiga (which is a popular soda) and Soda Mima. We actually went to Soda Mima because it was highly recommended by our hotel — which we now understand why. Both sodas served delicious food, and the service was great!

Besides the sodas, we basically stuck to our accommodations for lunch and dinner.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”three” space_between_items=”tiny” image_size=”full” images=”9329,9330,9331″][/mkdf_tabs_item][mkdf_tabs_item tab_title=”Where to Play”][vc_column_text]

Místico Arenal Hanging Bridges

Known for the suspension bridges (the name probably gave it away), you can choose between a self-guided or guided tour. For a self-guided tour, the entrance fee is $26 USD and takes between 2-3 hours to explore. You’ll see different species of mammals, birds, plants, reptiles and more. This was a fun experience, however, if you’re terrified of heights then this can be unnerving. Especially with the longer bridges since you’re suspended high above the rainforest. Historically, I’ve been scared of heights but this wasn’t that bad, for me.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”two” space_between_items=”tiny” image_size=”full” images=”9276,9339″][vc_empty_space][vc_separator][vc_column_text]

La Fortuna Waterfall

One of the most popular waterfalls in Costa Rica, and for a reason. This majestic waterfall can be heard before it’s even seen. You’ll have to trek down a 500-step staircase to the base of La Fortuna. Which is fine, until it’s time to come back up. Luckily, they’ve included areas to stop and rest going up and down. Entry is $18 USD and they accept both cash (colónes and USD) and credit card. They also have bathrooms with showers, a cafe, and gift shop near the entrance.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_single_image enable_image_shadow=”no” image=”9341″ image_size=”full”][vc_empty_space][vc_separator][vc_column_text]

Canopy Tour (zip lining) & Tarzan Swing

We booked our ziplining tour with Ecoglide Arenal Park and ended up loving the company, receptionist, and our guides! The receptionist handles their Whatsapp, and she responded so quickly and was excited to see us when we arrived. Our guides (Bryan, Andres and Miguel) were so funny and made sure we had the best experience.

The ziplining portion of the tour consists of 11 cables — which ranges in height and length. The tour costs $50 USD and includes the equipment and a drink (water or beer) after the tour. We didn’t do the Tarzan swing, but if you’re interested it’s an additional $28 USD. Also, after the tour you can purchase the professional videos and photos that were taken for $20 USD.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”three” space_between_items=”tiny” image_size=”full” images=”9347,9345,9344″][vc_empty_space][vc_separator][vc_column_text]

Titokú Hot Springs

Part of the Arenal Kioro Suites & Spa, Titokú Hot Springs offers eight pools ranging in temperatures and sizes. I personally loved this hot spring because it feels like a treasure hidden in plain sight, and it’s affordable! Entrance is only $23.10 USD per person, and because we arrived when they opened, we had the entire place to ourselves. Titokú is surrounded by bigger thermal resorts, like Baldi Hot Springs Resort Hotel & Spa which is next door.

The entrance fee includes access to their dressing rooms and lockers, and a complimentary towel. You’ll also find a full-service bar on-site, as well as optional snacks. The service was amazing — we got a complimentary drink and then I ordered a sangria, which was delicious.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”three” space_between_items=”tiny” image_size=”full” images=”9348,9349,9350″][vc_empty_space][vc_separator][vc_column_text]

Jacó Beach/Playa Jacó

We did a day trip to Jacó beach since it’s only an hour away from Finca Chilanga. The beach itself is beautiful and clean, and the sand is dark brown. And since Jacó beach is within the town of Jacó, you’ll find many restaurants and bars, hotels, souvenir shops, and more.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”zoom” number_of_columns=”two” space_between_items=”tiny” image_size=”full” images=”9351,9352″][/mkdf_tabs_item][/mkdf_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

(Finally) Sharing some photos/videos from my 30th (Finally) Sharing some photos/videos from my 30th birthday trip to #Kenya — leave it to me to post this 9 months later 😅

Read my blog post for a full recap (🔗 in bio) on where I ate, played, and stayed in #Kenya🇰🇪 (#Nairobi and #Lamu) including @ololo_lodge, which was hands down one of my favorite stays because:

1. It's located in #NairobiNationalPark: Making it a great option if you're short on time but want to experience a safari 🦁🐒🦓🦒
2. Their staff is very attentive and friendly, especially their manager, James!
3. Your stay includes complimentary breakfast, lunch, dinner, and beverages (alcoholic or non-alcoholic)
4. Their amenities include a spa room 💆🏾‍♀️ and even a pool to enjoy in between the morning and evening #gamedrives

Does anyone else love the first #washday after getting a trim? Your ends are healthy, detangling is a breeze, and your curls just act right 🤣

I've posted a couple of these "revert silk press back to curly hair" videos on the ⏰️ app, and enjoy making them because it's fascinating seeing how much my hair shrinks with just water, it's like magic ✨️😍

I love getting silk presses because I get a brief break from my curls and get my necessary trims. However, nothing beats my #naturalhair! I wish I appreciated my curls more when I was younger and not striving for straight hair or a looser curl pattern, but I'm happy I do now 🙏🏾

🎉 This month marks my 8 year #naturalhair anniv 🎉 This month marks my 8 year #naturalhair anniversary! On September 4, 2015, my stylist cut my relaxed ends, starting my #naturalhairjourney.

To celebrate the occasion, here's my usual #lengthcheck from my recent #silkpress and trim.

Embracing my natural hair was one of the best decisions I made in my early 20s. This is the healthiest (and longest) I've ever seen my hair 😍 but it took a lot of patience and mistakes to get my hair where it's today.

I've never really shared some of these mistakes, but there were many — including:

• Experiencing heat damage (my stylist and I were able to fix this and have since stopped using high heat towards the front of my hair)
• Accidently cutting ✂️ a piece of my hair when unraveling #passiontwists 😅 (thankfully, it was towards the back of my head and has since grown out)
• Having protein overload (I underestimated how strong @aphogee's protein treatment is 😬)

What mistakes have you made in your hair journey?

Thanks to @taskrabbit, I was able to hire a Tasker to pick up last-minute items I needed for my recent trip.

This allowed me to focus my time and energy on more important things, like packing and doing my hair 👩🏾‍🦱.

@kayak and @taskrabbit have teamed up for a sweepstakes where one winner will get a $500 gift card towards travel from KAYAK + $500 in Taskrabbit credit.

Do you wear your #naturalhair 👩🏾‍🦱 whil Do you wear your #naturalhair 👩🏾‍🦱 while on vacation?

For 90% of my trips, I put my natural hair in #minitwists or #minibraids. Both are great low-maintenance styles, keep my hair moisturized in any climate, and are versatile to style.

My favorite hairstyles for mini twists and braids are: two buns, a low ponytail or bun, or wearing a scarf with my twists/braids out.

For the other 10%, my hair is either: blown out and styled, in a protective style (mainly #passiontwists or #senegalesetwists), or silk pressed. It really depends on factors like: the climate at the destination I'm going to, activities I'm getting into, and duration of trip.
