How to Take Your Own Passport Photo

  • February 21, 2021

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Did you know you can take your own passport photo? This can be the easiest, cheapest, most convenient and safest option, especially during this pandemic.

My passport expired February 2021, so in November 2020 I was excited to submit a better photo with my application. My last one was taken in high school at my local CVS and the experience was okay. But my hair was in a questionable state, and my eyebrows were horrendous. I was also wearing white, with a white backdrop — which was a terrible choice on my part.

So, I did some research on how to size and print my own photo for my application. In January 2021, I received my new passport with a beautiful photo showing my curls (and better eyebrows). I wanted to share how you can take your own passport photo from the comfort of your home.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row simple_background_color=”#f7f2ee” css=”.vc_custom_1613881618939{padding-bottom: 25px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Passport photo requirements

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Make sure to follow the U.S. State Department’s requirements and look at the acceptable and unacceptable examples they share. This will really help you see and understand how to pose, what to wear, and the overall photo quality.

  • Submit a color photo, printed on matte or glossy photo quality paper, taken in the last six months.
  • Use a clear image of your face, no filters or heavy shadows in the photo.
  • Face the camera with your head centered in the frame and not tilted.
  • No selfies.
  • No eyeglasses, hat, or head covering (there are exceptions in this area).
  • Use a plain white or off-white background.
  • No uniforms, clothing that looks like a uniform, or camouflage attire.
  • If you smile, it must be natural and unexaggerated — both of your eyes must be open.
  • Photo size should be 2×2 inches with your head centered and sized between 1 to 1.4 inches.
  • Jewelry/piercings are acceptable as long as they don’t hide your face; tattoos are also acceptable.

How to Take Your Own Photo

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]In all honesty, you don’t need over the top equipment to snap a good passport photo. Below are the things you’ll need (I also underlined the specific items I used):

  • Digital camera or smartphone camera
  • Tripod or someone to snap your photo
  • Good lighting (e.g. ring light, natural sunlight)
  • White, off-white background

I actually used a photo I captured months prior for a Bask & Bloom collaboration. Since I take tons of photos for hair content, I knew I had to have one that met the requirements.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_separator][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Tools to help you take, resize, and print your own photo

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Need assistance taking your photo, making sure it meets the requirements, or printing? Thanks to technology, there are tons of websites and apps to help:

  • The U.S. State Department: Outside of the requirements listed, you can also utilize their free photo-cropping tool. It helps size your photo correctly so you can print it yourself. I used this tool when picking my photo, but as of December 31, 2020, it’s unavailable. However, they’re working to upgrade it.
  • iVisa.com: This website does everything for those who want to take a passport photo at home. This includes printing and mailing your photos to your house. You can also pay extra to have your photos checked to make sure they’ll be approved.
  • Passport Photo Booth (iOS | Android): One of the many apps out there that’ll help you take your passport photo. Passport Photo Booth helps with the photo composition, showing you exactly where to pose within the frame. You can email or save the image for free, or pay extra to have your photo printed.
  • Target Passport Photo: Upload your photo using their easy-to-follow passport photo guidelines and Target will send copies to you.
  • Walmart Passport Photo: Same concept as Target’s, you can also pick-up your photo in 1 hour.

I ended up using Walmart to print my photos, but you can print your photos at home. I, however, didn’t have glossy or matte 2×2 inches photo quality paper for my printer.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

(Finally) Sharing some photos/videos from my 30th (Finally) Sharing some photos/videos from my 30th birthday trip to #Kenya — leave it to me to post this 9 months later 😅

Read my blog post for a full recap (🔗 in bio) on where I ate, played, and stayed in #Kenya🇰🇪 (#Nairobi and #Lamu) including @ololo_lodge, which was hands down one of my favorite stays because:

1. It's located in #NairobiNationalPark: Making it a great option if you're short on time but want to experience a safari 🦁🐒🦓🦒
2. Their staff is very attentive and friendly, especially their manager, James!
3. Your stay includes complimentary breakfast, lunch, dinner, and beverages (alcoholic or non-alcoholic)
4. Their amenities include a spa room 💆🏾‍♀️ and even a pool to enjoy in between the morning and evening #gamedrives

Does anyone else love the first #washday after getting a trim? Your ends are healthy, detangling is a breeze, and your curls just act right 🤣

I've posted a couple of these "revert silk press back to curly hair" videos on the ⏰️ app, and enjoy making them because it's fascinating seeing how much my hair shrinks with just water, it's like magic ✨️😍

I love getting silk presses because I get a brief break from my curls and get my necessary trims. However, nothing beats my #naturalhair! I wish I appreciated my curls more when I was younger and not striving for straight hair or a looser curl pattern, but I'm happy I do now 🙏🏾

In celebration, my long overdue guide on where to eat, play, and stay in Atlanta is live! (🔗 in bio).

🥂 cheers to my new home, to new memories, to abundance, to community (and being closer to family), to self-love, and building generational wealth ✨️🙏🏾

🎉 This month marks my 8 year #naturalhair anniv 🎉 This month marks my 8 year #naturalhair anniversary! On September 4, 2015, my stylist cut my relaxed ends, starting my #naturalhairjourney.

To celebrate the occasion, here's my usual #lengthcheck from my recent #silkpress and trim.

Embracing my natural hair was one of the best decisions I made in my early 20s. This is the healthiest (and longest) I've ever seen my hair 😍 but it took a lot of patience and mistakes to get my hair where it's today.

I've never really shared some of these mistakes, but there were many — including:

• Experiencing heat damage (my stylist and I were able to fix this and have since stopped using high heat towards the front of my hair)
• Accidently cutting ✂️ a piece of my hair when unraveling #passiontwists 😅 (thankfully, it was towards the back of my head and has since grown out)
• Having protein overload (I underestimated how strong @aphogee's protein treatment is 😬)

What mistakes have you made in your hair journey?

Thanks to @taskrabbit, I was able to hire a Tasker to pick up last-minute items I needed for my recent trip.

This allowed me to focus my time and energy on more important things, like packing and doing my hair 👩🏾‍🦱.

@kayak and @taskrabbit have teamed up for a sweepstakes where one winner will get a $500 gift card towards travel from KAYAK + $500 in Taskrabbit credit.

Do you wear your #naturalhair 👩🏾‍🦱 whil Do you wear your #naturalhair 👩🏾‍🦱 while on vacation?

For 90% of my trips, I put my natural hair in #minitwists or #minibraids. Both are great low-maintenance styles, keep my hair moisturized in any climate, and are versatile to style.

My favorite hairstyles for mini twists and braids are: two buns, a low ponytail or bun, or wearing a scarf with my twists/braids out.

For the other 10%, my hair is either: blown out and styled, in a protective style (mainly #passiontwists or #senegalesetwists), or silk pressed. It really depends on factors like: the climate at the destination I'm going to, activities I'm getting into, and duration of trip.
