My Favorite 2018 Curly Hair Products

  • January 30, 2019

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

2018 was an amazing year for my curly hair journey. My hair experienced a lot of growth and I felt confident in my hairs health coming into 2019. I was also blessed to try and review products from some of my favorite brands, and some new brands. So, I thought it’d be a good idea to review my favorite 2018 curly hair products.

These 13 products have become staples in my hair routine and will, most likely, be included in my favorite natural hair products list.

Pre-Shampoo:

African Pride Moisture Miracle Pre-Shampoo

What better way to kick off my favorite 2018 curly hair products list than with this product? There are tons of products on this list, but this pre-shampoo is THE ONE! An absolute game changer and staple for me in 2018. My hair routine will never be the same! It makes detangling, and prepping for wash day a breeze. I’m convinced it’s the aloe vera and coconut water blend. My hair always feels moisturized and soft after using this pre-shampoo.

SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Shampoo

This shampoo is life! It lathers easily, I get a lot of slip and am able to detangle my hair fairly easily. My hair feels very cleansed and moisturized every time I use it.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1590443309421{background-color: #f7f2ee !important;}”]

Aztec Bentonite Clay

I can’t believe I haven’t tried Aztec bentonite clay masks sooner. My curls have been missing out. I was a little weary when I first applied, but surprised at the results. It improved my hairs elasticity and made my hair feel very clean (but not dry) and shiny!

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1590443388811{background-color: #f7f2ee !important;}”]

African Pride Moisture Miracle Honey & Coconut Oil Nourish & Shine Shampoo

This has pretty much become my go-to weekly shampoo. The amount of moisture I get is crazy, I’m able to detangle with so much ease. My hair always feels soft after using this shampoo, and it does a great job at cleansing my scalp. It also smells amazing, which isn’t really a shocker since it has honey and coconut in the ingredients.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Conditioner

Black Travel Box Conditioner Bar

The only conditioner to make my favorite 2018 curly hair products list. This isn’t your ordinary conditioner since it’s a soap bar. I really like how moisturizing and cleansing it’s. I was able to get a good lather from this bar, plus it’s the perfect size for traveling. I’m definitely going to be bringing this with me for my trips.

Deep Conditioner

Curls Cashmere and Caviar Hair Masque

I’m obsessed with this hair masque. From the thickness of the product, to the smell, I absolutely love it. In my initial review, I think I mentioned having never used Curls products before. This hair masque makes me realize what I’ve been missing! It literally melts in my hair like butter and leaves my hair feeling soft and shiny every time I use it.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1590443351599{background-color: #f7f2ee !important;}”]

SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Rehydration Treatment Masque

I need to restock on this masque ASAP, it’s life! Honestly, this entire line is my absolute favorite. The gel, shampoo, conditioner, masque, hot oil treatment and leave-in are all amazing. It may be because my hair loves coconut, or because this line is just the truth. If I had to pick my favorite from the line, it’ll definitely be this masque. It leaves my hair so moisturized and soft, I almost don’t want to rinse it out of my hair.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1590443368470{background-color: #f7f2ee !important;}”]

Protein Treatment

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”3242″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Protein Power Treatment

This has become another staple in my regimen. You’re normally supposed to do a protein treatment once a month. However, my curls are high porosity, meaning my curls love protein. So I use this treatment more frequently when I feel like my hair needs strengthening.

I know the jar is small, but the Protein Power Treatment is THICK. You can literally turn the jar upside down and no product will come out. This is great because I use less product as it just melts into my curls. I usually sit with this product in my hair for 15-30 minutes, with a hooded dryer. My curls always come out shiny, strong and moisturized after rinsing out.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Leave-in Conditioners

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”3241″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Multi-Action Leave-in

I used the entire bottle that I got from SheaMoisture before 2018 ended. I had to get another bottle ASAP! It’s the perfect lightweight leave-in conditioner, especially for the summer. This leave-in moisturizes my hair and leaves it shiny and soft. Plus, it provides protein for my high porosity hair from the yogurt and hydrolyzed wheat protein.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Styling cream/gel

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”3633″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

African Pride Moisture Miracle Curling Cream

This cream has been a staple for me this winter. It’s so thick and creamy in consistency, so it coats my hair perfectly. It does an amazing job with defining my curls and keeping it moisturized. Sometimes I do the L.O.C method when using this cream. Other times I just do the C.O method (cream and oil).

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”8072″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Coconut Daily Hydration Styling Gel

Another favorite from the SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Coconut collection. This product made me a believer in gels. I love the smell, and it’s lightweight while still providing a good hold. It doesn’t leave my hair feeling stiff and doesn’t leave a cast. I think this will be a summer staple for me as creams are usually too heavy in the warmer months.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”3348″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

Curls Cashmere & Caviar Hair Gelle

This is not your typical gel. For one, this product is creamy and slips through my hair with ease. It has a light hold and truly made me realize how amazing gels can be!

I think both of these gels are going to be my staple summer stylers. They’re both very light, but provide a good hold that lasts a few days.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Oil

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”3634″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

African Pride Moisture Miracle 5 Essential Oils

So many beneficial and amazing oils in one bottle, that’s what this product is. Castor, grape-seed, argan, coconut and olive, plus vitamin-e. All of these ingredients makes this oil the ultimate scalp and hair oil. I’ve been using this religiously. As a sealant, hot oil treatment and even a pre-shampoo treatment. I love this oil and will definitely be using it throughout 2019.

Read my blog post for a full recap (🔗 in bio) on where I ate, played, and stayed in #Kenya🇰🇪 (#Nairobi and #Lamu) including @ololo_lodge, which was hands down one of my favorite stays because:

1. It's located in #NairobiNationalPark: Making it a great option if you're short on time but want to experience a safari 🦁🐒🦓🦒
2. Their staff is very attentive and friendly, especially their manager, James!
3. Your stay includes complimentary breakfast, lunch, dinner, and beverages (alcoholic or non-alcoholic)

Does anyone else love the first #washday after getting a trim? Your ends are healthy, detangling is a breeze, and your curls just act right 🤣

I've posted a couple of these "revert silk press back to curly hair" videos on the ⏰️ app, and enjoy making them because it's fascinating seeing how much my hair shrinks with just water, it's like magic ✨️😍

I love getting silk presses because I get a brief break from my curls and get my necessary trims. However, nothing beats my #naturalhair! I wish I appreciated my curls more when I was younger and not striving for straight hair or a looser curl pattern, but I'm happy I do now 🙏🏾

🎉 This month marks my 8 year #naturalhair anniv 🎉 This month marks my 8 year #naturalhair anniversary! On September 4, 2015, my stylist cut my relaxed ends, starting my #naturalhairjourney.

To celebrate the occasion, here's my usual #lengthcheck from my recent #silkpress and trim.

Embracing my natural hair was one of the best decisions I made in my early 20s. This is the healthiest (and longest) I've ever seen my hair 😍 but it took a lot of patience and mistakes to get my hair where it's today.

I've never really shared some of these mistakes, but there were many — including:

• Experiencing heat damage (my stylist and I were able to fix this and have since stopped using high heat towards the front of my hair)
• Accidently cutting ✂️ a piece of my hair when unraveling #passiontwists 😅 (thankfully, it was towards the back of my head and has since grown out)
• Having protein overload (I underestimated how strong @aphogee's protein treatment is 😬)

What mistakes have you made in your hair journey?

Do you wear your #naturalhair 👩🏾‍🦱 whil Do you wear your #naturalhair 👩🏾‍🦱 while on vacation?

For 90% of my trips, I put my natural hair in #minitwists or #minibraids. Both are great low-maintenance styles, keep my hair moisturized in any climate, and are versatile to style.

My favorite hairstyles for mini twists and braids are: two buns, a low ponytail or bun, or wearing a scarf with my twists/braids out.

For the other 10%, my hair is either: blown out and styled, in a protective style (mainly #passiontwists or #senegalesetwists), or silk pressed. It really depends on factors like: the climate at the destination I'm going to, activities I'm getting into, and duration of trip.
