Visiting Palccoyo (Alternative) Rainbow Mountain

  • December 2, 2019

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I’ve seen so many images of the beautiful Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain (or Winikunka/Montaña de Siete Colores). However, I dismissed visiting when I heard it gets crowded, and the trek can take 3-4 hours. Honestly, I’m not a big hiker and usually scared of heights. Also, the idea of waking up early to hike for hours in a higher altitude just didn’t interest me. So, I crossed Rainbow Mountain off as a possibility for my recent trip to Peru. However, that changed once I found out about Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain!

I found out about Palccoyo through FlashpackerConnect’s Instagram – because of the beautiful images, I had to book a tour.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Disclaimer: This post is in partnership with FlashpackerConnect. However, this review is 100% honest and based on my own experience. [/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”lightbox” number_of_columns=”two” space_between_items=”tiny” images=”7136,7138,7143,7141″ image_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1575321767945{background-color: #f7f2ee !important;}”]

Why visit Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain?

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1575321774776{margin-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][mkdf_numbered_list number=”1″ number_color=”#cc8983″ title=”Less Crowded” text=”Not many people know about Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain, so you’ll likely have the place to yourself! We passed by maybe 4-5 small groups during the hike, but most were leaving when we arrived. It was nice to enjoy the scenery at my own pace, and it was peaceful and quiet the entire trek. I was able to take so many photos and not feel rushed.”][mkdf_numbered_list number=”2″ title=”Easier hike” number_color=”#cc8983″ text=”The hike only takes 20-30 minutes, unlike the 2-4 hour trek you experience at the Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. I was able to enjoy the scenery and not struggle hiking. The altitude at Palccoyo is roughly similar to Vinicunca – although Palccoyo is a couple of feet/meters less. However, since the trek is significantly shorter, you shouldn’t have too many issues.”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][mkdf_numbered_list number=”3″ number_color=”#cc8983″ title=”Snooze for an extra hour” text=”Tours to Vinicunca start their pick-up between 3-4am, however, most Palccoyo tours start their pick-up around 5am. So, you’ll be able to sleep in for a couple more hours.”][mkdf_numbered_list number=”4″ number_color=”#cc8983″ title=”Three Rainbow Mountains + Ausangate Glacier” text=”You can view three rainbow mountains at Palccoyo in one spot – meanwhile, you only get to see one at Vinicunca. Also, the surrounding mountains at Palccoyo are covered in red and pink tones, it’s a beauty to witness! Visiting Palccoyo on a clear day and you’ll see the beautiful snowy peaks of the Ausangate Glacier in the distance.”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Note: There are bathrooms at the entrance and it costs 1 sol to use. They did offer toilet paper, but it’d bring some with you just in case. Also, when leaving Palccoyo, make sure to get your passport stamped (for a fee)![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1575321824096{background-color: #f7f2ee !important;}”]

You get a spread of food and eggs cooked the way you want. And the chef prepared lunch was insane – it was definitely too much delicious Peruvian food for four people. But of course, we didn’t complain and ate as much as we could! Both meals were provided at the same location, at a house about one-hour away from Cusco.[/vc_column_text][mkdf_bulleted_list bullet_type=”square” bullet_color=”#cc8983″ title=”Private transportation from/to your hostel/hostel in Cusco”][vc_column_text]Our driver and tour guide were prompt in pick-up and drop-off times. He also helped us prevent altitude sickness with coco leaves and Agua de Florida. Aiben even taught us how to chew the leaves. He also paid for our bathroom entrance, photo shoot with a llama and provided snacks. We couldn’t have asked for a more caring and mindful tour guide![/vc_column_text][mkdf_bulleted_list bullet_type=”square” bullet_color=”#cc8983″ title=”Entrance fees”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1575314915557{padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”]FlashpackerConnect pays for your Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain entrance fee, which is roughly 10 soles per person.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”lightbox” number_of_columns=”three” space_between_items=”tiny” images=”7170,7185,7171,7173,7176,7178,7179,7180,7181,7182,7183,7184″ image_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1575321512886{background-color: #f7f2ee !important;}”]

Overall review:

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]All in all, FlashpackerConnect is a phenomenal tour company! I love that they focus on providing small group tours, it gives you a more personalized experience. I learned a lot, and got to go at my own pace, because the tour group was super small. My tour only had four people – they usually have a max of eight. Because the group was small, it was also easy making friends with the other guests on the tour!

I love that we had almost three hours to explore and take all the photos we wanted. And, because the trek was empty, we didn’t have to wait for folks to move to get the shots we wanted. Also, since I visited during the rainy season, I saw the Red River, which was a beautiful. Apparently the red is vibrant this time of year from the soils and rock that make up the unique landscape.

The FlashpackerConnect team is very responsive and helpful! I updated them on a change in accommodation two days prior to my tour and they responded very quickly. Prior to my tour, FlashpackerConnect sent over an email with additional tips for a successful trip. This email included:

  • Travel insurance recommendations (FlashpackerConnect doesn’t provide refunds for any reason)
  • Considerations for altitude and harsh weather
  • List of items to bring (e.g. toilet paper, warm clothes, sunscreen, motion sickness tablets, cash, water, etc.)

FlashpackerConnect provide tours throughout the world, so check them out![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][mkdf_image_gallery type=”grid” enable_image_shadow=”no” image_behavior=”lightbox” number_of_columns=”two” space_between_items=”tiny” images=”7150,7149,7145,7151″ image_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

(Finally) Sharing some photos/videos from my 30th (Finally) Sharing some photos/videos from my 30th birthday trip to #Kenya — leave it to me to post this 9 months later 😅

Read my blog post for a full recap (🔗 in bio) on where I ate, played, and stayed in #Kenya🇰🇪 (#Nairobi and #Lamu) including @ololo_lodge, which was hands down one of my favorite stays because:

1. It's located in #NairobiNationalPark: Making it a great option if you're short on time but want to experience a safari 🦁🐒🦓🦒
2. Their staff is very attentive and friendly, especially their manager, James!
3. Your stay includes complimentary breakfast, lunch, dinner, and beverages (alcoholic or non-alcoholic)
4. Their amenities include a spa room 💆🏾‍♀️ and even a pool to enjoy in between the morning and evening #gamedrives

Does anyone else love the first #washday after getting a trim? Your ends are healthy, detangling is a breeze, and your curls just act right 🤣

I've posted a couple of these "revert silk press back to curly hair" videos on the ⏰️ app, and enjoy making them because it's fascinating seeing how much my hair shrinks with just water, it's like magic ✨️😍

I love getting silk presses because I get a brief break from my curls and get my necessary trims. However, nothing beats my #naturalhair! I wish I appreciated my curls more when I was younger and not striving for straight hair or a looser curl pattern, but I'm happy I do now 🙏🏾

🎉 This month marks my 8 year #naturalhair anniv 🎉 This month marks my 8 year #naturalhair anniversary! On September 4, 2015, my stylist cut my relaxed ends, starting my #naturalhairjourney.

To celebrate the occasion, here's my usual #lengthcheck from my recent #silkpress and trim.

Embracing my natural hair was one of the best decisions I made in my early 20s. This is the healthiest (and longest) I've ever seen my hair 😍 but it took a lot of patience and mistakes to get my hair where it's today.

I've never really shared some of these mistakes, but there were many — including:

• Experiencing heat damage (my stylist and I were able to fix this and have since stopped using high heat towards the front of my hair)
• Accidently cutting ✂️ a piece of my hair when unraveling #passiontwists 😅 (thankfully, it was towards the back of my head and has since grown out)
• Having protein overload (I underestimated how strong @aphogee's protein treatment is 😬)

What mistakes have you made in your hair journey?

Thanks to @taskrabbit, I was able to hire a Tasker to pick up last-minute items I needed for my recent trip.

This allowed me to focus my time and energy on more important things, like packing and doing my hair 👩🏾‍🦱.

@kayak and @taskrabbit have teamed up for a sweepstakes where one winner will get a $500 gift card towards travel from KAYAK + $500 in Taskrabbit credit.

Do you wear your #naturalhair 👩🏾‍🦱 whil Do you wear your #naturalhair 👩🏾‍🦱 while on vacation?

For 90% of my trips, I put my natural hair in #minitwists or #minibraids. Both are great low-maintenance styles, keep my hair moisturized in any climate, and are versatile to style.

My favorite hairstyles for mini twists and braids are: two buns, a low ponytail or bun, or wearing a scarf with my twists/braids out.

For the other 10%, my hair is either: blown out and styled, in a protective style (mainly #passiontwists or #senegalesetwists), or silk pressed. It really depends on factors like: the climate at the destination I'm going to, activities I'm getting into, and duration of trip.
