Product Review: The Black Travel Box

  • November 2, 2018

I’m so excited to have collaborated with The Black Travel Box! As soon as I saw their products on Instagram, I knew I had to try. The Black Travel Box sells TSA-sized hair, body and skincare products for women of color. As an avid traveler, this is something that I knew would save me time and space in my luggage. The products range from jars (2 & 4 fl oz), bars and pouches. Not ready to commit to their two, or four fl oz products? They also provide sample sizes, they’ve literally thought of everything!

All products are $20 and under. You can do a single order for products, or on a subscription basis. I took these products with me on my trip to Montreal.

Products I received

  • Body Balm (2 fl oz jar)
  • Lip Balm
  • Hair Balm (2 fl oz jar)
  • Conditioner Bar

Key ingredients

The Black Travel Box uses natural ingredients including: jojoba, coconut and peppermint oil, shea butter, etc.

Conditioner Bar

β€œConditioning your hair just got easier. Detangle, moisturize, and clean your tresses with a light lather of this waste-free conditioning bar. The fresh citrus scents of Bergamot and cleanliness of White Tea will make wash day less of a burden. The Panthenol and Silk proteins added to this bar keeps your curls and twists moist, flexible, and full of spring. Strengthen your strands and walk out looking wonderful after using this hair bar” β€” The Black Travel Box

The Conditioner Bar has a light lather and does a good job at moisturizing my hair. It made detangling my hair easy. This is the first time I’ve used a soap-like bar for my hair and I liked it. I rubbed the Conditioner Bar between my hands until I got a lather, then applied to my hair.

Body Balm

β€œGive your skin something to smile about on those sunny days. Coconut oil fused with Mango and Shea butter is everything your skin will love. Use this special formula of skin tightening and toning ingredients to protect and nourish your skin. Leave the dry skin behind with this richly, moisturizing body balm” β€” The Black Travel Box

The Body Balm is very moisturizing. In the jar, The Body Balm looks whipped but it has an oily consistency when applied. Because of the consistency, I’d suggest using lightly.

Lip Balm

β€œWhether you’re traveling with your sweetheart or swimming solo, give your lips something to love with our minty cocoa butter balm. This protective layer of hydration gives your lips everything you need while exploring through cold temperatures, sun, or indoor heat. With a hint of Vitamin E, keep your kissable lips healed, smooth, and camera ready” – The Black Travel Box

This Lip Balm is great, I use it almost everyday and it moisturizes my lips so nicely. I feel like some chapsticks don’t last long, but this one lasted a few hours and kept my lips hydrated. The smell is very minty, which might be strong for some, but I don’t mind it.

Hair Balm

β€œSmooth, soften, and seal your tresses with our nutrient rich balm. Nutrient packed with natural conditioners and deep penetrating oils to add shine, strengthen, and protect hair” – The Black Travel Box

The Hair Balm is amazing! It glided through my hair and helped soften it. I used The Hair Balm as a sealant when styling my hair in the L.O.C. method. I think the Hair Balm would be a great assistance in nightly scalp massages. It would also be great for a pre-shampoo or hot oil treatment. The Hair Balm is solid in the jar, but melts once rubbed in between your palms.

Overall Review on The Black Travel Box

  • All products less than 4 fl oz can fit in your carry-on luggage in a TSA-approved bag.
  • The Conditioner Bar and Lip Balm doesn’t have to be put in a TSA-approved bag since they’re solid. I put them in a roll-up bag where I keep hair tools, toiletry, makeup and  jewelry.
  • Most products, besides the lip balm, have a nutty/almond-like smell to me.
  • This company is genius for coming up with products specifically for WOC who travel. I love that the ingredients are natural and everything is travel-sized. Making the life of budget WOC travelers, like me, easier when packing for trips. The Black Travel Box is really a game-changer and I’m so excited to see what other things they have in store!

(Finally) Sharing some photos/videos from my 30th (Finally) Sharing some photos/videos from my 30th birthday trip to #Kenya β€” leave it to me to post this 9 months later πŸ˜…

Read my blog post for a full recap (πŸ”— in bio) on where I ate, played, and stayed in #KenyaπŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ (#Nairobi and #Lamu) including @ololo_lodge, which was hands down one of my favorite stays because:

1. It's located in #NairobiNationalPark: Making it a great option if you're short on time but want to experience a safari πŸ¦πŸ’πŸ¦“πŸ¦’
2. Their staff is very attentive and friendly, especially their manager, James!
3. Your stay includes complimentary breakfast, lunch, dinner, and beverages (alcoholic or non-alcoholic)
4. Their amenities include a spa room πŸ’†πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ and even a pool to enjoy in between the morning and evening #gamedrives

Does anyone else love the first #washday after getting a trim? Your ends are healthy, detangling is a breeze, and your curls just act right 🀣

I've posted a couple of these "revert silk press back to curly hair" videos on the ⏰️ app, and enjoy making them because it's fascinating seeing how much my hair shrinks with just water, it's like magic ✨️😍

I love getting silk presses because I get a brief break from my curls and get my necessary trims. However, nothing beats my #naturalhair! I wish I appreciated my curls more when I was younger and not striving for straight hair or a looser curl pattern, but I'm happy I do now πŸ™πŸΎ

πŸŽ‰ This month marks my 8 year #naturalhair anniv πŸŽ‰ This month marks my 8 year #naturalhair anniversary! On September 4, 2015, my stylist cut my relaxed ends, starting my #naturalhairjourney.

To celebrate the occasion, here's my usual #lengthcheck from my recent #silkpress and trim.

Embracing my natural hair was one of the best decisions I made in my early 20s. This is the healthiest (and longest) I've ever seen my hair 😍 but it took a lot of patience and mistakes to get my hair where it's today.

I've never really shared some of these mistakes, but there were many β€” including:

β€’ Experiencing heat damage (my stylist and I were able to fix this and have since stopped using high heat towards the front of my hair)
β€’ Accidently cutting βœ‚οΈ a piece of my hair when unraveling #passiontwists πŸ˜… (thankfully, it was towards the back of my head and has since grown out)
β€’ Having protein overload (I underestimated how strong @aphogee's protein treatment is 😬)

What mistakes have you made in your hair journey?

Thanks to @taskrabbit, I was able to hire a Tasker to pick up last-minute items I needed for my recent trip.

This allowed me to focus my time and energy on more important things, like packing and doing my hair πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸ¦±.

@kayak and @taskrabbit have teamed up for a sweepstakes where one winner will get a $500 gift card towards travel from KAYAK + $500 in Taskrabbit credit.

Do you wear your #naturalhair πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸ¦± whil Do you wear your #naturalhair πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸ¦± while on vacation?

For 90% of my trips, I put my natural hair in #minitwists or #minibraids. Both are great low-maintenance styles, keep my hair moisturized in any climate, and are versatile to style.

My favorite hairstyles for mini twists and braids are: two buns, a low ponytail or bun, or wearing a scarf with my twists/braids out.

For the other 10%, my hair is either: blown out and styled, in a protective style (mainly #passiontwists or #senegalesetwists), or silk pressed. It really depends on factors like: the climate at the destination I'm going to, activities I'm getting into, and duration of trip.
