I’ve traveled to over 20 countries and for most of my vacations, I wore my natural hair. After many years of trial and error, I’ve found my favorite vacation hairstyles for natural hair, which I’m sharing below.
Natural Hair Hairstyles
Cold Climate π₯Ά
When traveling to destinations with a cold/cool climate, these are the hairstyles I’ve worn:
BLOW OUT
Blowing out your hair is a great way to reduce tangles and breakage and even makes styling your hair easier. I styled my stretched hair into mini twists during my Portugal trip and even wore a twist-out one day. For my Arizona trip, I rocked two cornrows for most of the trip and unraveled when I wanted something different.
I blow out my natural hair using RevAir and then style my hair with my favorite products. If interested in buying the RevAir, use my code CURLYHAIRADVENTURES for 10% off.
SILK PRESS
Wearing a silk press on vacation can be very dicey, so closely monitor the weather until your departure. I’ve worn a silk press only a handful of times: San Diego, California, USA, Edinburgh, Scotland, and Barcelona, Spain.

Hot/Humid Climate π₯΅
When traveling to destinations with a hot/humid climate, these are the hairstyles I’ve worn:
“MINI” HAIRSTYLES
This includes mini: twists, braids, and even braids into twists and vice versa. Mini twists, in particular, are my go-to hairstyle for all vacations regardless of the climate. But especially if it’s hot and humid because it’s low maintenance, reduces breakage and damage, and helps retain moisture. The other benefit of “mini” hairstyles is that you can style them differently. For instance, my favorites are a low bun, ponytail, and space buns. These styles help keep my hair away from my face, which is, particularly, helpful in hot and humid climates.
I complete my wash day process and style my hair into mini twists while my hair is wet/damp. Typically, I can keep these in for two weeks, however, I don’t usually go that long before washing my hair.
BRAID OR TWIST OUT
Not necessarily a low-maintenance style since your ends aren’t tucked away, and you’ll have to keep restyling to maintain definition. I’ve done these styles for hot and cold climates, but only when my itinerary allows for downtime to do maintenance.
