Product Review: The Black Travel Box

  • November 2, 2018

I’m so excited to have collaborated with The Black Travel Box! As soon as I saw their products on Instagram, I knew I had to try. The Black Travel Box sells TSA-sized hair, body, and skincare products for women of color. As an avid traveler, this is something that I knew would save me time and space in my luggage. The products range from jars (2 & 4 fl oz) to bars and pouches. Not ready to commit to their two, or four fl oz products? They also provide sample sizes, they’ve literally thought of everything!

All products are $20 and under. You can do a single order for products or on a subscription basis. I took these products with me on my trip to Montreal.

Products I received

  • Body Balm (2 fl oz jar)
  • Lip Balm
  • Hair Balm (2 fl oz jar)
  • Conditioner Bar

Key ingredients

The Black Travel Box uses natural ingredients including jojoba, coconut, and peppermint oil, shea butter, etc.

Conditioner Bar

“Conditioning your hair just got easier. Detangle, moisturize, and clean your tresses with a light lather of this waste-free conditioning bar. The fresh citrus scents of Bergamot and cleanliness of White Tea will make wash day less of a burden. The Panthenol and Silk proteins added to this bar keeps your curls and twists moist, flexible, and full of spring. Strengthen your strands and walk out looking wonderful after using this hair bar” — The Black Travel Box

The Conditioner Bar has a light lather and does a good job of moisturizing my hair. It made detangling my hair easy. This is the first time I’ve used a soap-like bar for my hair and I liked it. I rubbed the Conditioner Bar between my hands until I got a lather, then applied it to my hair.

Body Balm

“Give your skin something to smile about on those sunny days. Coconut oil fused with Mango and Shea butter is everything your skin will love. Use this special formula of skin tightening and toning ingredients to protect and nourish your skin. Leave the dry skin behind with this richly, moisturizing body balm” — The Black Travel Box

The Body Balm is very moisturizing. In the jar, The Body Balm looks whipped but it has an oily consistency when applied. Because of the consistency, I’d suggest using it lightly.

Lip Balm

“Whether you’re traveling with your sweetheart or swimming solo, give your lips something to love with our minty cocoa butter balm. This protective layer of hydration gives your lips everything you need while exploring through cold temperatures, sun, or indoor heat. With a hint of Vitamin E, keep your kissable lips healed, smooth, and camera ready” – The Black Travel Box

This Lip Balm is great, I use it almost every day and it moisturizes my lips so nicely. I feel like some chapsticks don’t last long, but this one lasted a few hours and kept my lips hydrated. The smell is very minty, which might be strong for some, but I don’t mind it.

Hair Balm

“Smooth, soften, and seal your tresses with our nutrient rich balm. Nutrient packed with natural conditioners and deep penetrating oils to add shine, strengthen, and protect hair” – The Black Travel Box

The Hair Balm is amazing! It glided through my hair and helped soften it. I used The Hair Balm as a sealant when styling my hair in the L.O.C. method. I think the Hair Balm would be a great assistance in nightly scalp massages. It would also be great for a pre-shampoo or hot oil treatment. The Hair Balm is solid in the jar but melts once rubbed in between your palms.

Overall Review on The Black Travel Box

  • All products less than 4 fl oz can fit in your carry-on luggage in a TSA-approved bag.
  • The Conditioner Bar and Lip Balm don’t have to be put in a TSA-approved bag since they’re solid. I put them in a roll-up bag where I keep hair tools, toiletry, makeup, and jewelry.
  • Most products, besides the lip balm, have a nutty/almond-like smell to me.
  • This company is genius for coming up with products specifically for WOC who travel. I love that the ingredients are natural and everything is travel-sized. Making the life of budget WOC travelers, like me, easier when packing for trips. The Black Travel Box is really a game-changer and I’m so excited to see what other things they have in store!

Confession: My hair lives in mini twists about 95% Confession: My hair lives in mini twists about 95% of the time and I'm 100% okay with that 🤷🏾‍♀️

It's one of the things that has helped with my length retention over the years. And while it might not be the most "exciting" style, it's consistent (a must for my busy schedule), incredibly versatile, and keeps my high porosity, high density, fine hair moisturized and ends tucked away.

This is just one of the many tips I share in my 30+ page natural hair handbook.

If you want to:
👩🏾‍🦱 Simplify your routine
👩🏾‍🦱 Understand your hair's unique characteristics
👩🏾‍🦱 Find products that actually work for you
👩🏾‍🦱 Discover styles that aid in length retention
👩🏾‍🦱 Learn how to travel with your curls

Then this is the handbook for you. It's essentially everything I wish I knew when I first started my natural hair journey.

I’ve reached the stage of life where I refuse to c I’ve reached the stage of life where I refuse to come home needing a "vacation from my vacation."

When I planned this Tuscany 🇮🇹 trip, I knew the only way I’d actually reset was to intentionally leave space for me to just... be. Coming off a heavy month of April (marking the 10-year anniversary of my dad’s passing) this time away was more than just a trip, it was a necessary pause for my mental health.

I loved the busyness of Florence, but also needed the stillness of the countryside. So, we retreated to the Tuscan hills (via: @locandadeilogi) to drink a copious amount of wine 🍷 (via: @colombaio_santachiara), eat well (via: @cantinettadeilogi), sunbathe and nap poolside. 😴

I used my customizable itinerary template to include that balance into the schedule ahead of time, so I didn’t have to do anything once we arrived, besides relax.

Grab the exact template I use through the link in my bio 🔗 (also, my Tuscany blog post is coming soon).

Ecuador 🇪🇨 is really slept on (IMO), it's such a b Ecuador 🇪🇨 is really slept on (IMO), it's such a beautiful country with so much to offer!

Here are some things I'd recommend doing 👇🏾

🐎 Horseback riding in Cotopaxi National Park where you get views of three volcanoes, including Cotopaxi (which is one of the world's highest active volcanoes 🌋).

🐖 Try their traditional dish, cuy (guinea pig). I avoided it in Peru because both countries typically serve it whole with the head on 🥴. However, I tried it at @somos.rest in a dumpling 🥟 and it was actually delicious.

🌎 Straddle the equatorial line by visiting the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo.

⛰️ Get a day pass at @lunavolcan where you can relax in several pools/jacuzzis with views overlooking Baños, and more.

🍫 Cacao is native to the Amazon, so if you're a chocolate lover, eat up at places like @republicadelcacao's chocolate lab.

💦 Visit the @cascadaelpailon waterfall.

My Ecuador post sharing where to eat, play, and stay in Quito, Baños, and Cotopaxi is now live (link 🔗 in bio).

This month marks my 10th natural hair anniversary! This month marks my 10th natural hair anniversary! 🎉 On September 4, 2015, I officially started my #naturalhairjourney (after 3 years of transitioning from relaxed hair).

➡️ Swipe for things I've learned about natural hair care through this decade-long journey. Also sharing some additional tips below:

1️⃣ Protective styles ≠ healthy hair. Imma hold your hand when I say this: Protective styles aren't a shortcut to healthy hair. They're a break from styling, not an excuse for neglect. If you aren't taking care of your hair underneath, what are you actually protecting? 🤔

2️⃣ Textured hair is not created equal. What works for someone else might not work for you. Get to know your hair. You can get a consultation from a stylist, or take the @myavanahaircare analysis test.

3️⃣ Healthy habits = healthy hair. If you’re not taking care of yourself inside and out, your hair will tell on you 🗣. Drink your water 💦, move your body💪🏾, manage your stress, take your @blackgirlvitamins (I got a discount code via link in bio). Healthy hair starts with a healthy you.

🥂 Cheers to 10 years of learning to love the hair that naturally grows out of my scalp.
