Product Review: African Pride Moisture Miracle Collection

  • September 4, 2018

I received the African Pride Moisture Miracle collection and other extra goodies! I’ve been following African Pride for years. When I was transitioning from relaxed to natural, I faithfully used African Pride’s Olive Miracle Leave-in Conditioner. This leave-in conditioner was one of the reasons I was able to successfully transition for over two years and gain confidence in starting my natural hair journey. I also love African Pride because their products have always been reasonably priced. The entire Moisture Miracle collection is UNDER $5, y’all!

The key ingredients used in this collection include:

  • Moroccan Red Clay: clarifies hair and improves elasticity
  • Flax Seed Oil: defines curls and provides a natural hold
  • Baobab Oil: restores and strengthens damaged hair and locks in moisture
  • Cacao Powder: restores hair and prevents damage
  • Honey: attracts and retains moisture while adding shine
  • Aloe Vera: nourishes, heals, and protects against breakage and hair loss
  • Coconut Water, Oil, and Milk: helps strengthen/repair hair, restores moisture, softens, detangles, and protects

The African Pride Moisture Miracle collection is available at select Walmart locations, Dollar General, and local beauty supply stores.

Aloe & Coconut Water Detangle & Condition Pre-Shampoo

The pre-shampoo “instantly softens and detangles hair with the natural healing and soothing benefits of aloe vera, combined with the hydrating properties of coconut water.” This pre-shampoo is a GAME CHANGER! This will be added to the list of my favorite products and will probably be my primary pre-shampoo product. It made detangling and prepping for wash day a breeze as the product just melted into my hair. My hair felt moisturized and soft and the pre-shampoo smells amazing!

The consistency feels almost like a gel, which I think is because of the aloe vera. While it’s a very runny product, it interestingly feels heavy. I like the consistency because I can feel the product on my hair.

Honey & Coconut Oil Nourish & Shine Shampoo

This shampoo says it, “gently cleans hair of dirt and build-up without stripping the follicles of their natural oils. The humectant and reparative benefits of honey and coconut oil combine to deeply penetrate and hydrate coils and curls.” This shampoo is the ONE! Just like the pre-shampoo, this shampoo will be a staple product in my routine. It does an amazing job at cleansing my scalp, without leaving my hair dry afterwards. In fact, my hair felt incredibly soft throughout, and after, the process. It was easy to detangle my hair with this shampoo. It also smells amazing with the honey and coconut combination.

Honey, Chocolate & Coconut Oil Nourish & Restore Conditioner

The conditioner says it, “restores moisture by combining the nutritive properties of honey and coconut oil with the restorative benefits of chocolate (cacao) to strengthen, transform, and repair dry coils and curls.” In all honesty, this conditioner didn’t WOW me like the pre-shampoo and shampoo. I actually feel like the shampoo was more moisturizing and had better slip than this conditioner. However, I do love the smell of this conditioner.

Interestingly, this conditioner is fairly watery in consistency. Which I wasn’t too crazy about because I like my conditioners to be on the thicker side. The shampoos should be one of the few runny products in my wash day line-up 🤷🏽.

Moroccan Red Clay & Shea Butter Detox & Soften Heat Activated Masque

“This detoxifying and restorative clay masque uses the clarifying benefits of Moroccan red clay to remove impurities and product build-up on hair. Shea butter replenishes moisture and tames frizz.” This masque is LIFE, I’m not kidding. When I first applied this product, it didn’t feel moisturizing. However, it does say “heat activated” on the packaging. This implies that you should use heat with this product. Shout-out to African Pride for sending me a complimentary hooded bonnet dryer attachment! I sat with the bonnet attached to my blow dryer for 15 minutes and afterward, my hair felt EXTREMELY moisturized. I almost cried when I had to rinse the masque out, it’ll be another staple for me!

Y’all know how much I LOVE a thick deep conditioner. This masque came through in consistency! I felt like I didn’t have to use a lot because of the thickness. You can turn the jar upside down and nothing will come out. Since Moroccan red clay is an ingredient in this masque, the texture has a clay-like feel to it.

Coconut Milk & Honey Hydrate & Shine Leave-In Conditioner

African Pride’s leave-in conditioner, “combines ultra-hydrating coconut milk with replenishing honey so hair is instantly softened, hydrated and shinier.” This spray smells SO good! It’s very lightweight and moisturizing. I feel like this will be my go-to leave-in when I need to refresh my curls. Or, when the weather is warmer as I like to use thicker leave-in products during colder months. My hair definitely looks shiny and feels soft and hydrated with this leave-in.

Coconut Oil & Baobab Oil Hydrate & Strengthen Leave-In Cream

Hydrate and strengthen hair with a nourishing blend of coconut and baobab oils. Rich in vitamins and fatty acids, this leave-in cream infuses strands with nutrients, imparts lasting moisture, helps to protect against breakage, and adds shine.” I found this leave-in cream to be very moisturizing and made my hair very shiny.

This leave-in is very thick, which I like for the colder months. Since this leave-in cream is on the thicker side, I’d suggest applying water before applying this cream. This way it’ll be easier to work the product through your hair. I also will probably only use this product when styling on wash day. I use lighter leave-in conditioners throughout the week to refresh.

Shea Butter & Flaxseed Oil Moisturize & Define Curling Cream

The “versatile styling cream blends shea butter and flaxseed oil to provide deep moisture, lasting definition, and radiant shine, ensuring coils and curly styles are smooth and bouncy with a soft hold.” This curling cream is great! I haven’t really branched out from SheaMoisture’s Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Don’t fix what isn’t broken, right? But, this cream will definitely be a staple product! I think it did an amazing job defining my curls, holding my styles, and providing shine.

Like the leave-in cream, this product is somewhat on the thicker side. I say somewhat because it’s a bit runny, however, a little goes a long way. I feel like if you apply too much of this product then it might leave your hair flaky. This will definitely be used more during the colder months as I like using heavy creams and butters during this time.

Strengthen & Protect 5 Essential Oils with Vitamin E

This oil “uses a nourishing mix of five premium oils (Castor, Grapeseed, Argan, Coconut, Olive). Plus vitamin E to replenish natural nutrients, protect against breakage, promote growth and strengthen strands. All while infusing coils and curls with moisture and body.” This is the ULTIMATE scalp and hair oil. I’ve used it as a:

  1. Sealant when doing my LOC/LCO styling method.
    2. Hot oil treatment.
    3. Pre-shampoo treatment.

This oil has so many beneficial oils that all aid in healthy hair growth.

Overall Review of African Pride’s Moisture Miracle collection

  • I was surprised that the leave-in cream and curling cream didn’t clash since they’re both fairly thick products. But, they complement each other very well. My curls were defined and moisturized when I used both to style.
  • I love that the Moisture Miracle collection has a lightweight, and heavier leave-in option.
  • My absolute favorites from this line are the pre-shampoo, shampoo, heat-activated masque, and 5 essential oils! These will DEFINITELY be staple products for me!
  • I’d give this entire collection a 10/10. Although I wasn’t thoroughly impressed with the conditioner, every other product in this collection was GOLD! Especially for the price point of each product, I think this collection is amazing.

Hi, I’ve been trying the Curling cream, the leave-in and the coconut milk and honey. Honestly the leave-in is the best I’ve ever used since I’ve gone natural and it leaves my hair so soft but I just couldn’t get an oil to go with it because to all those I used,it always leaves white stuffs on my hair. And then going thru your blog I realize that they (African Pride) has an Oil, don’t know if I can get it here in France, because we can’t get all the products like in the US, but it’s a must try. The milk and honey is really not for me makes my hair very, very dry, and the curling cream don’t curl for me.
      Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for reading! I know African Pride sells their products on Amazon, maybe try buying the oil through there? Here’s the link: https://amzn.to/2qwdn24.

I have been using the shea moisturizer lotion for mixed textures before they rebranded. They seem to have removed the line for mixed textures and it worked so Much for me. The one written natural hair is really bad for my hair. 🙁 I’m lost and I have asked them severally what is their substitute for the former one with no response. I even shed a lot of hair after not finding the lotion in the market. Everything else tangles and dries my hair

          Hi Livie,

I am so sorry to hear that! It is always a bummer when products are discontinued. Do you happen to remember the exact name of the SheaMoisture lotion you used to use?

Hi there. I was wondering, do you recommend the aloe and coconut water pre-shampoo for relaxed hair?

      Hi Sirius,

Thank you for reaching out! I don’t have relaxed hair so I can’t answer that question. However, if your relaxed hair typically likes some (or all) of the ingredients listed in the pre-shampoo then I’d say give it a try!

I have been using all of the products except for the mask. I love the prepoo with the aloe and coconut water and the shampoo. But those condition leave my hair dry. And it puts a white looking film on my hair. The first time I used it I thought I put way too much on my hair. So when I used it t jo s time I didn’t put nearly as much and it did the same thing. Your curl cream leaves a film in my hair.

      Hi Jay,

Thank you for reaching out! My hair is high porosity so I can’t speak to if this line works for low porosity hair. Are you familiar with any ingredients in this line that your hair typically responds positively to? For example, I know my hair loves aloe vera, honey and shea butter which can be found in most, if not all, of the products in the line. So I knew my hair would like products in this line.

I dont know which of the products that keeps leaving white flakes in my hair after I wash. It’s not the curling cream because I tried two wash days without it. It’s not the masque because I tried a wash without it. So I dont have any idea. I plan on excluding a product each time I wash to get an idea .

Oh no! I think you have the right idea by excluding a product each time to see what could be causing the flakes. I’d also make sure to apply products lightly.

      Hi Ray!

If you’re looking for moisture between wash days, I’d recommend using water and the leave in cream. The oil is used to seal in that moisture.

When I planned this Tuscany 🇮🇹 trip, I knew the only way I’d actually reset was to intentionally leave space for me to just... be. Ecuador 🇪🇨 is really slept on (IMO), it's such a b Ecuador 🇪🇨 is really slept on (IMO), it's such a beautiful country with so much to offer!

Here are some things I'd recommend doing 👇🏾

🐎 Horseback riding in Cotopaxi National Park where you get views of three volcanoes, including Cotopaxi (which is one of the world's highest active volcanoes 🌋).

🐖 Try their traditional dish, cuy (guinea pig). I avoided it in Peru because both countries typically serve it whole with the head on 🥴. However, I tried it at @somos.rest in a dumpling 🥟 and it was actually delicious.

🌎 Straddle the equatorial line by visiting the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo.

⛰️ Get a day pass at @lunavolcan where you can relax in several pools/jacuzzis with views overlooking Baños, and more.

🍫 Cacao is native to the Amazon, so if you're a chocolate lover, eat up at places like @republicadelcacao's chocolate lab.

This month marks my 10th natural hair anniversary! This month marks my 10th natural hair anniversary! 🎉 On September 4, 2015, I officially started my #naturalhairjourney (after 3 years of transitioning from relaxed hair).

➡️ Swipe for things I've learned about natural hair care through this decade-long journey. Also sharing some additional tips below:

1️⃣ Protective styles ≠ healthy hair. Imma hold your hand when I say this: Protective styles aren't a shortcut to healthy hair. They're a break from styling, not an excuse for neglect. If you aren't taking care of your hair underneath, what are you actually protecting? 🤔

2️⃣ Textured hair is not created equal. What works for someone else might not work for you. Get to know your hair. You can get a consultation from a stylist, or take the @myavanahaircare analysis test.

3️⃣ Healthy habits = healthy hair. If you’re not taking care of yourself inside and out, your hair will tell on you 🗣. Drink your water 💦, move your body💪🏾, manage your stress, take your @blackgirlvitamins (I got a discount code via link in bio). Healthy hair starts with a healthy you.

🥂 Cheers to 10 years of learning to love the hair that naturally grows out of my scalp.
