My Favorite 2018 Curly Hair Products

  • January 30, 2019

2018 was an amazing year for my curly hair journey. My hair experienced a lot of growth and I felt confident in my hair’s health coming into 2019. I was also blessed to try and review products from some of my favorite brands, and some new brands. So, I thought it’d be a good idea to review my favorite 2018 curly hair products.

These 13 products have become staples in my hair routine and will, most likely, be included in my favorite natural hair products list.

Pre-Shampoo

African Pride Moisture Miracle Pre-Shampoo

What better way to kick off my favorite 2018 curly hair products list than with this product? There are tons of products on this list, but this pre-shampoo is THE ONE! An absolute game-changer and staple for me in 2018. My hair routine will never be the same! It makes detangling and prepping for wash day a breeze. I’m convinced it’s the aloe vera and coconut water blend. My hair always feels moisturized and soft after using this pre-shampoo.

Shampoo

SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Shampoo

This shampoo is life! It lathers easily, I get a lot of slip, and able to detangle my hair fairly easily. My hair feels very cleansed and moisturized every time I use it.

Aztec Bentonite Clay

I can’t believe I haven’t tried Aztec bentonite clay masks sooner. My curls have been missing out. I was a little weary when I first applied, but surprised at the results. It improved my hair’s elasticity and made my hair feel very clean (but not dry) and shiny!

African Pride Moisture Miracle Honey & Coconut Oil Nourish & Shine Shampoo

This has pretty much become my go-to weekly shampoo. The amount of moisture I get is crazy, I’m able to detangle with so much ease. My hair always feels soft after using this shampoo, and it does a great job of cleansing my scalp. It also smells amazing, which isn’t a shocker since it has honey and coconut in the ingredients.

Conditioner

Black Travel Box Conditioner Bar

The only conditioner to make my favorite 2018 curly hair products list. This isn’t your ordinary conditioner since it’s a soap bar. I really like how moisturizing and cleansing it is. I was able to get a good lather from this bar, plus it’s the perfect size for traveling. I’m definitely going to be bringing this with me for my trips.

Deep Conditioner

Curls Cashmere and Caviar Hair Masque

I’m obsessed with this hair masque. From the thickness of the product to the smell, I absolutely love it. In my initial review, I think I mentioned having never used Curls products before. This hair masque makes me realize what I’ve been missing! It melts in my hair like butter and leaves my hair feeling soft and shiny every time I use it.

SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Rehydration Treatment Masque

I need to restock on this masque ASAP, it’s life! Honestly, this entire line is my absolute favorite. The gel, shampoo, conditioner, masque, hot oil treatment, and leave-in are all amazing. It may be because my hair loves coconut, or because this line is just the truth. If I had to pick my favorite from the line, it’d be this masque. It leaves my hair so moisturized and soft, I almost don’t want to rinse it out of my hair.

Protein Treatment

Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Protein Power Treatment

This has become another staple in my regimen. You’re normally supposed to do a protein treatment once a month. However, my curls are high porosity, meaning my curls love protein. So I use this treatment more frequently when I feel like my hair needs strengthening.

I know the jar is small, but the Protein Power Treatment is THICK. You can literally turn the jar upside down and no product will come out. This is great because I use less product as it just melts into my curls. I usually sit with this product in my hair for 15-30 minutes, with a hooded dryer. My curls always come out shiny, strong, and moisturized after rinsing out.

Leave-in Conditioners

SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Multi-Action Leave-in

I used the entire bottle that I got from SheaMoisture before 2018 ended. I had to get another bottle ASAP! It’s the perfect lightweight leave-in conditioner, especially for the summer. This leave-in moisturizes my hair and leaves it shiny and soft. Plus, it provides protein for my high porosity hair from the yogurt and hydrolyzed wheat protein.

Styling cream/gel

African Pride Moisture Miracle Curling Cream

This cream has been a staple for me this winter. It’s so thick and creamy in consistency, so it coats my hair perfectly. It does an amazing job of defining my curls and keeping them moisturized. Sometimes I use the L.O.C method when using this cream. Other times I just do the C.O method (cream and oil).

SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Coconut Daily Hydration Styling Gel

Another favorite from the SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Coconut collection. This product made me a believer in gels. I love the smell, and it’s lightweight while still providing a good hold. It doesn’t leave my hair feeling stiff and doesn’t leave a cast. I think this will be a summer staple for me as creams are usually too heavy in the warmer months.

Curls Cashmere & Caviar Hair Gelle

This is not your typical gel. For one, this product is creamy and slips through my hair with ease. It has a light hold and truly made me realize how amazing gels can be!

I think both of these gels will be my staple summer stylers. They’re both very light, but provide a good hold that lasts a few days.

Oil

African Pride Moisture Miracle 5 Essential Oils

So many beneficial and amazing oils in one bottle, that’s what this product is. Castor, grape seed, argan, coconut, and olive, plus vitamin E. All of these ingredients make this oil the ultimate scalp and hair oil. I’ve been using this religiously. As a sealant, hot oil treatment, and even a pre-shampoo treatment. I love this oil and will definitely be using it throughout 2019.

Confession: My hair lives in mini twists about 95% Confession: My hair lives in mini twists about 95% of the time and I'm 100% okay with that 🤷🏾‍♀️

It's one of the things that has helped with my length retention over the years. And while it might not be the most "exciting" style, it's consistent (a must for my busy schedule), incredibly versatile, and keeps my high porosity, high density, fine hair moisturized and ends tucked away.

This is just one of the many tips I share in my 30+ page natural hair handbook.

If you want to:
👩🏾‍🦱 Simplify your routine
👩🏾‍🦱 Understand your hair's unique characteristics
👩🏾‍🦱 Find products that actually work for you
👩🏾‍🦱 Discover styles that aid in length retention
👩🏾‍🦱 Learn how to travel with your curls

Then this is the handbook for you. It's essentially everything I wish I knew when I first started my natural hair journey.

I’ve reached the stage of life where I refuse to c I’ve reached the stage of life where I refuse to come home needing a "vacation from my vacation."

When I planned this Tuscany 🇮🇹 trip, I knew the only way I’d actually reset was to intentionally leave space for me to just... be. Coming off a heavy month of April (marking the 10-year anniversary of my dad’s passing) this time away was more than just a trip, it was a necessary pause for my mental health.

I loved the busyness of Florence, but also needed the stillness of the countryside. So, we retreated to the Tuscan hills (via: @locandadeilogi) to drink a copious amount of wine 🍷 (via: @colombaio_santachiara), eat well (via: @cantinettadeilogi), sunbathe and nap poolside. 😴

I used my customizable itinerary template to include that balance into the schedule ahead of time, so I didn’t have to do anything once we arrived, besides relax.

Grab the exact template I use through the link in my bio 🔗 (also, my Tuscany blog post is coming soon).

Ecuador 🇪🇨 is really slept on (IMO), it's such a b Ecuador 🇪🇨 is really slept on (IMO), it's such a beautiful country with so much to offer!

Here are some things I'd recommend doing 👇🏾

🐎 Horseback riding in Cotopaxi National Park where you get views of three volcanoes, including Cotopaxi (which is one of the world's highest active volcanoes 🌋).

🐖 Try their traditional dish, cuy (guinea pig). I avoided it in Peru because both countries typically serve it whole with the head on 🥴. However, I tried it at @somos.rest in a dumpling 🥟 and it was actually delicious.

🌎 Straddle the equatorial line by visiting the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo.

⛰️ Get a day pass at @lunavolcan where you can relax in several pools/jacuzzis with views overlooking Baños, and more.

🍫 Cacao is native to the Amazon, so if you're a chocolate lover, eat up at places like @republicadelcacao's chocolate lab.

💦 Visit the @cascadaelpailon waterfall.

My Ecuador post sharing where to eat, play, and stay in Quito, Baños, and Cotopaxi is now live (link 🔗 in bio).

This month marks my 10th natural hair anniversary! This month marks my 10th natural hair anniversary! 🎉 On September 4, 2015, I officially started my #naturalhairjourney (after 3 years of transitioning from relaxed hair).

➡️ Swipe for things I've learned about natural hair care through this decade-long journey. Also sharing some additional tips below:

1️⃣ Protective styles ≠ healthy hair. Imma hold your hand when I say this: Protective styles aren't a shortcut to healthy hair. They're a break from styling, not an excuse for neglect. If you aren't taking care of your hair underneath, what are you actually protecting? 🤔

2️⃣ Textured hair is not created equal. What works for someone else might not work for you. Get to know your hair. You can get a consultation from a stylist, or take the @myavanahaircare analysis test.

3️⃣ Healthy habits = healthy hair. If you’re not taking care of yourself inside and out, your hair will tell on you 🗣. Drink your water 💦, move your body💪🏾, manage your stress, take your @blackgirlvitamins (I got a discount code via link in bio). Healthy hair starts with a healthy you.

🥂 Cheers to 10 years of learning to love the hair that naturally grows out of my scalp.
