Product Review: Bask & Bloom

  • March 6, 2019

I was a winter/spring 2019 Bask & Bloom brand ambassador, through this program, I’ve received products to test and review. I’ll continue to test and review new Bask & Bloom products as they’re released.

About Bask & Bloom

Bask & Bloom Essentials was founded and created by Bahamian native, Candera Thompson. While transitioning to natural hair shortly after having her first child, Candera experienced lots of dryness and breakage. Candera decided to use her love for herbal teas and at-home remedies to solve this problem; while also utilizing her MBA to start her business. The result is a full line of high-quality products for hair and skin.

The name Bask & Bloom holds to what Candera seeks to achieve with every customer using her products. Radiant skin (Bask) and healthy, flourishing hair (Bloom). Bask & Bloom offers a line of deep moisturizing and sensitive-skin-friendly products.

You can purchase Bask & Bloom products at unique natural product boutiques and beauty supplies. Products are sold online in the UK, Canada, and the Bahamas.

Review: Bask & Bloom Hair Products

Rhassoul & Bentonite Clay Shampoo Bar

This shampoo bar says it:

  • Clarifies and gets rid of buildup
  • Provides moisturizing ingredients to avoid stripping of moisture

Y’all, this is about to be my go-to shampoo! I’m legit shook at how great this shampoo bar works. My hair not only feels clean after using the bar, but it also feels moisturized. If you’re looking for a clarifying shampoo that doesn’t dry out your hair, this is the one. Also, shampoo bars are a genius idea. You don’t have to worry about making a mess and can focus on cleansing your scalp. The rhassoul and bentonite clay shampoo bar can also be used as a facial bar!

Brahmi Root Hair Masque

The Brahmi root hair masque says it:

  • Strengthens the hair with the Ayurvedic herbal infusion
  • Provides moisture and shine with nourishing oils and honey
  • Detangles and softens hair
  • Repairs, restores, and promotes healthy hair growth

This masque is the TRUTH, I can’t believe how soft my curls felt after using this deep conditioning treatment. The amount of shine I got with this masque is crazy. It says you should apply this masque and keep it in for 30-45 minutes with, or without, heat. I steam my hair for 25 minutes, then leave it in for another 20 minutes. I didn’t want to wash it out of my hair, I couldn’t get over the moisture. Also, I love that this deep conditioner contains Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein! Although it’s very mild, my high porosity hair loves any protein it can get. This masque is very thick in consistency and just melts in my hair.

More Moisture Cream

This light moisturizing leave-in says it:

  • Provides intense moisture and shine
  • Is lightweight and can be used as a leave-in
  • Defines and strengthens hair
  • Uses herbal infusion for protection against breakage

Consistency-wise, I’m in love with this cream! It’s fairly thick like I like my leave-ins to be. This cream provides amazing definition and shine. So much so that I’ve used this as my leave-in and styling cream. I just followed up with their sealant to lock in the moisture.

Stimulating Herbal Oil

This oil says it nourishes and conditions while stimulating hair growth. You can use the Stimulating Herbal Oil in many ways:

  • As a pre-shampoo or hot oil treatment
  • For scalp massages to increase blood circulation
  • For dryness and flaking
  • As a sealant to lock in moisture
  • To add shine while taking down hairstyles

There are only three oils I use in my natural hair routine, and this is one of them. One of the other oils is Bask & Bloom’s Silky Aloe Curl Pudding. I love oils that provide multiple uses and this oil covers all of my wash day, and mid-week, needs. My scalp gets dry and flaky rather quickly, but this oil leaves my hair feeling moisturized.

Silky Aloe Curl Pudding

Although it says pudding, this product is a sealant and says:

  • Seals in moisture and defines curls
  • Adds shine
  • Fights frizz

This pudding feels like a mousse in texture. It’s fluffy and light, plus this sealant also defines curls. You could get a really good hold by using the More Moisture Cream and this pudding.

Hydrating Vitamin Curl Mousse

One of Bask & Bloom’s newer releases, this mousse has four key ingredients that provide different benefits:

  • Silk Protein: Adds luster and shine, body and manageability to hair
  • Avocado Fruit Extract: Provides moisture, strength, and protection from damage
  • Ginger Root Extract: Stimulates hair follicles to promote hair growth. The many vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids in ginger also help strengthen hair strands to combat hair loss and restore moisture
  • Biotin – Vitamin B7, promotes hair growth and prevents hair loss

Typically, I don’t use mousse because it leaves my hair feeling crunchy, dry, and sometimes flaky. The Hydrating Vitamin Curl Mousse provides moisture and amazing hold, like a mousse, without the crunch or flakes. Other mousses I’ve tried left my hair feeling stiff almost immediately after applying, and had a sticky feel/consistency. I didn’t have any of these issues with this mousse. My hair even felt stronger from the biotin, silk protein, ginger root extract, and avocado fruit extract, which is much-needed for my high porosity hair. I’ve used this mousse for twist and braid outs, and both styles come out defined, shiny and voluminous!

Twirly Hair Gel

This gel says it:

  • Provides soft hold and definition
  • Adds shine
  • Has no hard crunch or white flakes

As y’all may know, I’m not a big gel person. I’m always fearful of white flakes and my curls getting that crunchy feeling. But, this gel doesn’t give either! My hair still felt soft but had amazing shine, definition, and hold.

Review: Bask & Bloom Skin Care Products

Purifying Face Cleanser

The purifying face cleanser says it:

  • Deeply cleanses to remove impurities for a refreshing feel
  • Clears pores of dirt that cause breakouts

I was kind of expecting this cleanser to dry out my face since it includes activated charcoal in the ingredients. However, I was pleasantly surprised that my face was moisturized afterward and felt tighter. The purifying face cleanser gives you a deep clean.

Balancing Toner

Bask & Bloom’s Balancing Toner says it:

  • Removes additional dirt deep down in the skin after cleansing (with the purifying face cleanser)
  • Helps to calm the skin while balancing oil production to avoid breakouts and reduces blemishes

You’re supposed to mist your face with this toner after washing using the cleanser, then allow it to dry. While I do like this toner, I did feel a slight tingly/burning sensation around my nose area after spraying. It didn’t last long, but it was noticeable. All in all, I think this toner is amazing, it does help balance the amount of oil on your face. I used it while on vacation in Miami and my skin felt balanced. I even sprayed throughout the day while out in Miami to refresh my face.

Vibrant Radiance Facial Cream

The Vibrant Radiance Facial Cream says it:

  • Can be used as a day or night cream, alone or underneath makeup
  • Replenishes and rejuvenates the skin

This facial cream may come in a small jar, but a little goes a LONG way. This cream is thick, but lightweight and moisturizing. It doesn’t leave my face feeling greasy, which is interesting since the consistency is somewhat thick. You don’t need a lot to get the job done and there’s also a light floral fragrance, which I love.

Overall Review

Hair products

  • First things first, all of their products smell AMAZING. All of them have a fruity smell that I love
  • It’s hard to decide which product is my favorite because they’re all great. But I’ll always love a good masque
  • All of the products incorporate ayurvedic herbs, which aid in strengthening and growing your hair. These herbs are great for those who are protein-sensitive

Skin products

  • The skin care essentials travel kit really left my face moisturized throughout the day
  • My skin didn’t look or feel oily or greasy
  • While the toner did leave a slight tingly/burning sensation, I still think it’s a great product. The sensation didn’t last long at all

Confession: My hair lives in mini twists about 95% Confession: My hair lives in mini twists about 95% of the time and I'm 100% okay with that 🤷🏾‍♀️

It's one of the things that has helped with my length retention over the years. And while it might not be the most "exciting" style, it's consistent (a must for my busy schedule), incredibly versatile, and keeps my high porosity, high density, fine hair moisturized and ends tucked away.

This is just one of the many tips I share in my 30+ page natural hair handbook.

If you want to:
👩🏾‍🦱 Simplify your routine
👩🏾‍🦱 Understand your hair's unique characteristics
👩🏾‍🦱 Find products that actually work for you
👩🏾‍🦱 Discover styles that aid in length retention
👩🏾‍🦱 Learn how to travel with your curls

Then this is the handbook for you. It's essentially everything I wish I knew when I first started my natural hair journey.

I’ve reached the stage of life where I refuse to c I’ve reached the stage of life where I refuse to come home needing a "vacation from my vacation."

When I planned this Tuscany 🇮🇹 trip, I knew the only way I’d actually reset was to intentionally leave space for me to just... be. Coming off a heavy month of April (marking the 10-year anniversary of my dad’s passing) this time away was more than just a trip, it was a necessary pause for my mental health.

I loved the busyness of Florence, but also needed the stillness of the countryside. So, we retreated to the Tuscan hills (via: @locandadeilogi) to drink a copious amount of wine 🍷 (via: @colombaio_santachiara), eat well (via: @cantinettadeilogi), sunbathe and nap poolside. 😴

I used my customizable itinerary template to include that balance into the schedule ahead of time, so I didn’t have to do anything once we arrived, besides relax.

Grab the exact template I use through the link in my bio 🔗 (also, my Tuscany blog post is coming soon).

Ecuador 🇪🇨 is really slept on (IMO), it's such a b Ecuador 🇪🇨 is really slept on (IMO), it's such a beautiful country with so much to offer!

Here are some things I'd recommend doing 👇🏾

🐎 Horseback riding in Cotopaxi National Park where you get views of three volcanoes, including Cotopaxi (which is one of the world's highest active volcanoes 🌋).

🐖 Try their traditional dish, cuy (guinea pig). I avoided it in Peru because both countries typically serve it whole with the head on 🥴. However, I tried it at @somos.rest in a dumpling 🥟 and it was actually delicious.

🌎 Straddle the equatorial line by visiting the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo.

⛰️ Get a day pass at @lunavolcan where you can relax in several pools/jacuzzis with views overlooking Baños, and more.

🍫 Cacao is native to the Amazon, so if you're a chocolate lover, eat up at places like @republicadelcacao's chocolate lab.

💦 Visit the @cascadaelpailon waterfall.

My Ecuador post sharing where to eat, play, and stay in Quito, Baños, and Cotopaxi is now live (link 🔗 in bio).

This month marks my 10th natural hair anniversary! This month marks my 10th natural hair anniversary! 🎉 On September 4, 2015, I officially started my #naturalhairjourney (after 3 years of transitioning from relaxed hair).

➡️ Swipe for things I've learned about natural hair care through this decade-long journey. Also sharing some additional tips below:

1️⃣ Protective styles ≠ healthy hair. Imma hold your hand when I say this: Protective styles aren't a shortcut to healthy hair. They're a break from styling, not an excuse for neglect. If you aren't taking care of your hair underneath, what are you actually protecting? 🤔

2️⃣ Textured hair is not created equal. What works for someone else might not work for you. Get to know your hair. You can get a consultation from a stylist, or take the @myavanahaircare analysis test.

3️⃣ Healthy habits = healthy hair. If you’re not taking care of yourself inside and out, your hair will tell on you 🗣. Drink your water 💦, move your body💪🏾, manage your stress, take your @blackgirlvitamins (I got a discount code via link in bio). Healthy hair starts with a healthy you.

🥂 Cheers to 10 years of learning to love the hair that naturally grows out of my scalp.
